Yo Ho! Celebrating Over 50 Years of Disney Pirates at D23 Expo

How many of you love Pirates of the Caribbean?  Was your first memory of Pirates from Disneyland? Or perhaps Disney World?  For younger generations, their first Disney pirate may have been Captain Jack Sparrow from the blockbuster films.  Well, if ye come seekin’ adventure, keep a weather eye open.  There be pirates in these waters as we explore their history through Disney Archives.

This article was originally published on Laughingplace.com after D23 Expo.

A Tribute to Disney Pirates at D23 Expo

Pirates have been such an integral part of Disney history, even before the landmark attraction at Disneyland (now commemorating its 50th year).  D23 Expo celebrated Disney pirates in a special exhibit, showcasing treasures from the Disney Archives.  These are highlights from the D23 Expo and “A Pirates Life for Me: Disney’s Rascals, Scoundrels, and Really Bad Eggs.”

The queues snaked on and on for this exhibit.  The mood was set with music of Disney’s pirates – from X Atencio’s classic ‘Yo Ho! Yo Ho!’ to the Hans Zimmer film soundtracks, to songs from Muppet Treasure Island and Hook’s solo “Revenge! Revenge!” from Once Upon a Time.

Runway Success at Her Universe Fashion Show, Comic-Con

The world of Geek Fashion has blossomed, thanks in big part to Ashley Eckstein and Her Universe.  This was my article published July 29, 2016 on LaughingPlace.com reporting from San Diego Comic-Con’s Her Universe Fashion Show!

The third annual Her Universe Fashion Show was an absolute runway success at Comic-Con 2016. Growing each year, the Her Universe Fashion Show returned with 27 Finalists premiering their Geek Couture gowns to a packed ballroom at the Manchester Grand Hyatt on July 21, 2016.

For the first time, the entire audition-to-runway process was recorded as a docu-series on Comic-Con HQ, a novel video-on-demand channel.  Also new this year was also an open call audition at Hollywood & Highland a few months before Comic-Con.  Contestants had an opportunity to present their designs, explaining their ideas in front of the panel of judges.

This year’s Fashion Show was a joint effort between Her Universe, Hot Topic, Blondie Girl Productions, Espionage Cosmetics, and Comic-Con HQ.

“27 contestants. 4 weeks. 1 dream.”

Winners of the Fashion Show receive an opportunity to develop their own fangirl clothing line in collaboration with Her Universe, to be sold exclusively at Hot Topic stores nationwide.

In previous years, there were two winners of each fashion show: one Judges’ Choice, and one Audience Choice.  This year, a third winner was announced on July 28, 2016, based on voting online with Comic-Con HQ.

Meet Ashley Eckstein, Founder of Her Universe.

Ashley Eckstein has been a popular on-screen and voice actor, with screen credits including Muffy from That’s So Raven, and Ahsoka from Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.  During recording for Clone Wars, Ashley noticed that there really wasn’t anything for her to wear except for boys’ T-shirts when she wanted to show her fandom.

Ashley set out to create a Star Wars clothing line for women, and pitched this idea to Lucasfilm, who turned her down. She did not have enough experience creating a clothing line.

This did not discourage our favorite Fangirl.  Ashley did her research, partnered with The Araca Group (a merchandising and production firm), and pitched her idea again.  In 2010, Lucasfilm granted Her Universe a license.

Making Your New Year’s Travelutions

As we ring in the New Year, everyone talks about making resolutions — how about “Travelutions”?

“Travelutions” — travel resolutions. Set a goal to explore a new place in 2016!

Perhaps it is a dream vacation from your bucket list. Or a local treasure you’ve been meaning to see.

We were blessed to travel extensively in 2015, logging about 70,000 flight miles and visiting 13 different countries.

Where do you dream of going? Please let us know if we can help you reach your “Travelutions” in 2016!

At the end of your life, would you ever wish you spent more time at work? Usually, people wish they had spent more time making memories with their families, or exploring unfulfilled dreams.

Time. We all have a limited amount of time. As we say goodbye to 2015, we are reminded of the passing of another year.

What have we accomplished? What legacy have we built to leave behind?

Covering a Con (Part 2)

Being a fangirl, I love attending conventions, or ‘Cons’ as they’re now called.  From San Diego Comic-Con and Wonder-Con to Star Wars Celebration, D23, and a Celebration of Harry Potter — I have had the privilege to explore and share the worlds of fandom.

There are so many aspects of attending fan conventions.  What used to be shunned as the marginalized ‘nerd’ or ‘geek’ culture is now embraced and adored.  From comic book art to their iconic heroes-turned-blockbuster-stars at the box office, pop culture has come a long way.

In Part 1 of this article, I covered exclusive panels and fans who are ‘all in’ for their particular fandoms.  In this article (Part 2), I continue in other aspects of the modern con.

Cosplay

Increasingly, cosplay is the norm.  Fans are using their creativity to create elaborate costumes that are screen accurate, or doing unique mash-ups of their favorite characters.  They spend hours researching, and many more hours creating the costume. Continue reading Covering a Con (Part 2)

Darth Vader vs. Rancor

Many will remember a time when liking Star Wars made you weird.  Then people found community in others who also loved movies like Star Wars.  Growing up, they created organizations such as the 501st Legion to share their common passions and — even better — give back to the community through charity works. Welcome to the Chrysalis Travel Blog

Have you ever wished you had a friend that traveled the world, and shared their best travel tips and photos with you?  Have you lived vicariously through a friend’s Facebook feed as they post about their travels, wishing that you could do the same?  Do you think you would like to travel “someday,” but think it is impossible with your time and budget?

Over the years, we have heard this so many times from our friends and family as we have shared our world travels with them.  More and more of them suggested that we should start a travel blog sharing our experiences.  That is how our Chrysalis Travel blog came to be.

My husband and I have a passion for travel, and love nature and wildlife photography. Continue reading Welcome to the Chrysalis Travel Blog
